TURBT

TURBT

Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor (TURBT) is a surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat bladder cancer. It involves removing abnormal tissue growths, known as tumors, from the lining of the bladder using a specialized instrument called a resectoscope. TURBT is considered the gold standard for diagnosing and treating non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. Before the procedure, the patient may undergo various tests, such as urine tests, blood tests, imaging studies (like CT scans or ultrasound), and cystoscopy, to evaluate the extent and characteristics of the bladder tumor. Medications that affect blood clotting may need to be stopped prior to surgery.

After TURBT, patients are typically monitored in a recovery area for a few hours to ensure there are no immediate complications. Pain medications and antibiotics may be prescribed to manage discomfort and prevent infection. Patients may experience some blood in the urine and urinary frequency or urgency following the procedure, which usually resolves within a few days. TURBT is considered an effective treatment for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, with high rates of tumor removal and low rates of recurrence. However, like any surgical procedure, TURBT carries some risks, including bleeding, infection, perforation of the bladder, and recurrence of bladder cancer. It's important for patients to discuss the potential benefits and risks of TURBT with their healthcare provider before undergoing the procedure.
