Redical Prostatectomy

Redical Prostatectomy

Radical prostatectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove the entire prostate gland and surrounding tissues in cases of localized prostate cancer that has not spread beyond the prostate. It's considered the primary treatment option for prostate cancer that has not metastasized and has a high likelihood of cure, particularly in younger, healthier patients with aggressive forms of the disease. Before the procedure, the patient undergoes various tests, such as blood tests, imaging studies , and possibly a prostate biopsy, to evaluate the extent and characteristics of the prostate cancer and to assess overall health. Medications that affect blood clotting may need to be stopped prior to surgery.

Radical prostatectomy is considered an effective treatment for localized prostate cancer, with high rates of cure and long-term survival in appropriately selected patients. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved, including bleeding, infection, urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and complications related to anesthesia. It's important for patients to discuss the potential benefits and risks of radical prostatectomy with their healthcare provider before undergoing the procedure.
